Seagate: Dual-Actuator HDDs Gaining Adoption, 20TB HDD Production Ramping

However, the fact that frequent backups tend to fill up storage spaces quite sooner than expected. Therefore, the need for better and bigger storage devices is more than ever before.

Getting a 1 TB hard drive isn’t enough due to the increasing data and massive application sizes. Individuals prefer to buy used hard drive to save some cost but there is only a limit to devices that they can use at a time. This is why devices with more storage capacity are required for storing important data and might be useful for huge organizations.

Fortunately, Seagate is now ramping up the production for its new upcoming 20TB HDDs. Seagate also reported that the Hard Disc Drives would be using another technology known as Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) that would contain Two-Dimensional Magnetic Recording (TDMR) heads.

Bringing 20TB to the Mix:

The Chief Executive of Seagate said that they had started ramping production of 20TB HDDs, and were very happy with the customer’s interest in their devices. Such a massive storage device that provides better performance than the ones before us indeed that people would be looking forward to buying.

Earlier in July David Mosely also told that they would be preparing 20Tb PMR HDDS to compliment the already existing HAMR HDDs. These drives were shipped exclusively to operators of hyper-scale cloud data center operators and as a support for the company’s lyve storage systems.

David Mosley further commented by saying that they would be producing multiple variations of the 20TB HDDs to meet the demands of their customers. Seagate has without a doubt gained customer attention, as they have a reputation of providing what they promise.

Many people are aviating the new 20TB HDDs, as most people will get the peace of storage that they desire. However, providing more storage isn’t the only thing that the Seagate 20TB HDD is capable of doing, along with massive storage space it adds better performance to the frame.

Gaining Adoption to Dual-Actuator HDDs:

Dual-Actuator drives feature two actuators working on a single pivot point and are the new generation drives that tend to double their performance, while they maintain the same capacity of a single actuator drive.

The impressive news is that Seagate is also ramping up the production for its dual-actuator Mach.2 20TB HDDs. Initially, these next-generation HDDs were only available to selected customers and one of the largest adopters was none other than Microsoft. Microsoft managed to develop a number of ways to benefit from this technology.

In May Seagate began to share its Exos 2×14 HDD. This suggests that no longer has Seagate only committed to Microsoft and might be ready to offer its product to a broader range of clients. The Head of Seagate also said that they were excited by their customer response for Mach.2 HDDs, as they were being shipped at a large rate.

He further went on to say that the response they got was more than they initially anticipated. The demand for core and edge applications is there. Gaming devices cloud gaming require better performing and better capacity storage devices, as the games are massive and it doesn’t take too long to fill a 1TB storage. Therefore, adaptation to dual-actuator 20TB HDDs isn’t something to ignore.

High Capacities Coming Soon:

Technology is increasing and although Solid State Drives (SSDs) and 3D NAND have made tremendous progress to storage space and capacity there’s still no match for HDDs. Hard Disc Drives are the best in terms of cost per GB, reliability, and longevity.

The only option now stands that HDD manufacturers need to adapt to Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) technology, like MAMR and HAMR. A few of the competitors of Seagate such as Toshiba and Western Digital are using Fixed Controlled MAMR and Energy Assisted PMR for the time.

Seagate is trying to rise above the competition by young new disc technology that has a huge number of followers who believe that HAMR is the best technology as of now and would remain to be the best one for the future. Seagate is thinking of rising in the long-term when the technology that is being used now isn’t going to be reliable when it comes to HDDs.

David Mosely also ensured that HAMR is the real pathway to obtain 30TB and beyond and further proceeded with the fact they are confident in their statement and are predicting the new and modified versions of HDDs. They further predicted that they might achieve 100TB storage capacity until the year 2030,

Once such extended storage capacity is introduced, data collection and cloud storage won’t prove to be such a difficult and tiresome activity. Massive storage will allow entities to use a single drive for most or all of their data that would last a lot longer than the ones devices they are already working with.

With the announcement of Seagate’s 20TB dual actuator HDDs companies are waiting patiently to use this technology to their advantage. The devices are gaining adaptation, especially to the core and edge applications. Most companies buy used hard drive in large quantities to save costs and manage their stored data.

It doesn’t take to fill GB’s of storage and for some data centers is a lot sooner than you think. Therefore, the availability of 20TB dual-actuator Hard Disc Drives would be the best storage solution for many businesses.
