AMD Wants to Improve AI, HPC Efficiency 30x by 2025

AMD wants to improve AI and isn’t that far behind in doing so, as it is one of the most reputable companies when it comes to CPUs, GPUs, and other computer accessories. AMD has dominated the computing industry for decades by providing quality products and delivering high-performance systems. Most people prefer buying used AMD processors because of the adequate quality and known integrity.

AMD is relentless when it comes to improving its products and fulfilling its goals. AMD has recently announced that they will improve Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) up to 30 times by the year 2025.

This might be a tall mountain to climb for most brands but as we have seen AMD can be quite reluctant in achieving its goals. AMD focuses on lowering the cost of computing in data centers and places where the need for growing AI is present. AMD looks to solve such problems by making improvements in both areas software as well as hardware.

Which GPU is AMD Focussing On?

 It’s much clear to understand how AMD plans to hit these goals, once we understand which GPU architecture AMD plans to focus on. AMD has roughly mentioned Radeon Instinct but as we know that there are multiple architectures in the Radeon Instinct family. If AMD chooses to focus on its older GCN parts the goal of achieving 30x better would be much easier for AMD,

AMD’s ZEN 4:

AMD is also working on the new Zen 4 architecture which is suggested to support AVX-512. Even though this might be a rumor but AMD might boost its AI and overall HPC. The Zen 4 is presumably to be launched in late 2022 There’s a fair chance that AMD might add AMX support in the year 2025.

It might be difficult to estimate how much efficiency would AMD be able to gain from adopting the new SIMD but one certain thing is that a significant percentage of the improvements will come via AVX-512.

Improving V-Cache:

AMD might be looking to improve the overall performance by caching. It is an effective way to improve workload performance and maybe AMD has made some specific plans to improve the large L3 cache that would result in improving AI performance for the future.

Making improvements to their V-cache is a way of boosting AI performance effectively. CPUs tend to use more power when moving cache data when working on it. Therefore, large L3 caches and better caching significantly improve performance. Hence, AMD might just be closer to achieving 30X better performance by 2025 than we think.

How Can V-Cache Improve PC Performance?

As of now, AMD has shown great progress in gaming when backed with a v-cache of 4GHz. It showed an exponential increase from 4% to 25% just by adding the L3 cache. It featured a 15 percent increase in overall performance, which might be estimated as an entire generation upgrade of PC.

AMD hasn’t listed performance increase in anything except gaming but seeing the previous upgrades. It is suspected that an additional v-cache would increase the performance of multiple tasks and programs. However, we would have to wait for a while longer before we can say anything g for sure.

Is AMD’s Claim Possible?

AMD’s claim certainly raises some eyebrows; most people are questioning the claim of AMD in relation to their previous 25x 20 goal. AMD was targeting a 25X improvement in its power consumption by the year 2020. Claiming 25x improvement over six years proved to be a challenging task for AMD in the past.

In the past power supply wasn’t exactly the strong suit of AMD. Although the power consumption improved in the year 2020, improving AI and power consumption to 30x might prove to be a tricky task for AMD to achieve by 2025.

The real question for AMD isn’t if they can achieve 30x improvement by 2025, as the real question is whether they would be able to compete with other CPUs at the time such as ARM and x86.

Why Improve AI and HPC Efficiency?

AMD is looking to focus on AI and High-Performance-Computing because these are the main aspects of improving the overall performance of CPUs and GPUs. AMD is targeting gamers, as the need for upgrading gaming PCs has vastly increased and it is suspected to increase even higher by the year 2025.

Achieving a high level of programming is possible by improving the HPC and AI efficiency. Not only does the need for better-performing PCs that consume less energy exists but AMD also needs to rise above the competition, considering the neck-to-neck competition that already exists.

Conclusive Thoughts:

AMD has undoubtedly made a significant mark in the computing industry and buying of used AMD processors refurbished AMD processors and new AMD processors have increased. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that AMD will stay on the top for the years to come.

Nevertheless, AMD has set up a quite challenging goal for the year 2025, as they look to improve AI and HPC efficiency by 30 times. Even though it is a difficult task to accomplish but if AMD can manage to fulfill this goal it would give them an extra edge over the competition. Thus their chances of staying on the top would increase.
